Abstract

The larung ritual in the sedekah laut tradition in Tegal City is a form of Ritual Communication as gratitude for the sustenance and blessings of the fishermen of Tegal Sari, Tegal City who are looking for sea catches. The form of Ritual Communication is symbolized in the larung ritual which has mandatory offerings to carry out a ritual means. The symbol of offerings in the larung ritual has its own meaning that is believed and agreed upon by the local community. This research aims to find out and describe the symbolic meaning contained in the larung ritual offerings of the sedekah laut tradition at Tegal Sari Harbor, Tegal City. This research used qualitative with phenomenological approach based on philosophy and psychology. Primary data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results showed that the sedekah laut activity is a hereditary tradition from his ancestors to express gratitude to his ancestors, namely budug basu sang raja ikan, symbolized in the ritual of larung offerings that have their respective meanings; Buffalo Head as a symbol of keeping away animalistic traits and a measure of fishermen's welfare, Market Snacks as a symbol of harmony between communities to achieve the same goal, Flower 7 forms as a symbol of neutralizing oneself to avoid negative traits, and Miniature Ships as a symbol of fishermen's vehicles to stay safe and get abundant sea products.
