Abstract

Local media plays a critical role in raising awareness and advocating for environmental protection, particularly in the Meratus Mountains, South Kalimantan. The region faces severe environmental challenges such as deforestation, mining, and climate change, all of which threaten its ecological balance. Through accurate reporting and educational efforts, local media can help inform the public about the environmental impacts of human activities and promote sustainable practices. This study adopts a qualitative approach, using content analysis, observations, and interviews with local journalists, environmental activists, and community leaders. The findings reveal that local media is instrumental in disseminating information, driving advocacy, and engaging the public in conservation efforts. Furthermore, local media contribution in public policy and supports the promotion of sustainable tourism. The implications of this research suggest that strengthening local media can be crucial for the preservation of the Meratus ecosystem, benefiting both the environment and local communities.
