Housing Reconstruction in Lombok, Indonesia

Abstract

This is viewpoint article, or opinion piece, on post-earthquake housing reconstruction in Lombok, Indonesia. It is informed by relevant literature, study visit and local observations. The article discusses the key challenges in housing reconstruction globally, and how that is reflected in Lombok. The main aspects of the reconstruction program are presented together with an analysis of the main challenges. The key issue is that despite the efforts of the program, people in that earthquake-prone island remain at risk to the local hazards.
